Worried about identity theft? Practical steps and setup help.
Fixed remotely, usually same day. You approve the price before any work starts.
Signs and symptoms
- You received a breach notice, or a service told you your details were exposed.
- Password reset emails or sign-in codes arrive that you did not request.
- Charges, accounts, or credit enquiries appear that you do not recognize.
- Friends receive messages from your email or social accounts that you did not send.
- You entered details on a page or call that you now believe was fake.
Common causes
- A data breach at a company that held your details, which is outside your control.
- Passwords reused across several sites, so one exposure unlocks many accounts.
- A phishing email, text, or phone call that collected credentials or card details.
- Malware or an unwanted remote-access tool running on a personal computer.
- Information shared publicly that is enough to answer security questions.
How we fix it remotely
Work out what was exposed
We go through what happened, which accounts and details are involved, and whether money or an email account is affected. That determines the order of everything else.
Secure the email account first
Email is the key to password resets everywhere else. With your permission we help you change its password, enable two-step verification, and review forwarding rules, recovery addresses, and active sessions.
Check the device you use
If malware or an unwanted remote-access tool could be involved, we inspect the computer with your approval before you change further passwords on it.
Set up protection you control
We agree the scope and price first, then help you configure a password manager, two-step verification, and any monitoring or protection product you have chosen and bought yourself.
Explain the steps only you can take
Contacting your bank, placing a credit freeze or fraud alert, and filing an official report are actions you take directly. We explain the order and what to expect, but we do not act as you.
When remote support is not enough
- Freezing credit, disputing charges, and filing reports with your bank or the authorities must be done by you, as the account holder.
- US Repairs is a technology support provider, not a legal, credit-repair, or financial advisory service.
- If money has already left an account, contact your bank immediately rather than waiting for a support appointment.
- Contact US Repairs to discuss the device and arrange appropriate service. The Hampton address is a business address, not an invitation to visit or drop off equipment.
Typical time and price
Most remote sessions are finished in one appointment, typically 45 to 90 minutes, and remote work starts from $79. Hands-on hardware repairs usually take one to three business days, depending on the parts required, and start from $99 in labor plus parts. These are starting prices: the final price depends on the work actually performed, so prices may vary. Your technician explains the scope and quotes the job before any work starts, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
Things to try yourself first
Secure your email account first
Change the password and turn on two-step verification, then check for forwarding rules and recovery addresses you did not set. Whoever controls your email can reset everything else.
Stop reusing passwords
Give each important account its own password and keep them in a reputable password manager. Reuse is what turns one breach into many.
Contact your bank directly if money is involved
Call the number on your card or statement, never one from an email, text, or pop-up. Speed matters more than anything else at this stage.
Review account activity and statements
Check recent sign-ins, devices, and transactions on the accounts that matter most, and keep a dated note of anything you find for later reports.
Treat urgency as a warning sign
Pressure to act immediately, pay in an unusual way, or allow remote access is the pattern of a scam. Hang up and call the organization back on a number you looked up yourself.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do first if I think my details were stolen?
Secure your email account, then contact your bank directly if money or cards are involved. After that, change reused passwords and check your devices. Email first, because it controls password resets everywhere else.
Can US Repairs freeze my credit or dispute charges?
No. Those are actions only you can take as the account holder, with the credit bureaus and your bank. We explain the sequence and help secure your accounts and devices, but we do not act on your behalf.
Do I need an identity protection product?
That is your decision. If you choose one, you buy and own it, and we can help set it up on your devices and accounts. Strong unique passwords and two-step verification do much of the practical work on their own.
Someone called claiming my accounts were hacked. Is that real?
Treat an unexpected call as a scam until you have verified it independently. Hang up and call the organization back on a number you looked up yourself. US Repairs does not cold-call customers about compromised accounts.
What does protection setup cost?
The time and price depend on what we find and the work you approve. We explain the proposed scope and quote before work starts, and you decide whether to proceed. Verified typical times and prices for this issue have not been added yet.
